We fund and support civil society in its work for social inclusion, democracy and international development – at the European and global level. We aim at better and more strategic collaboration between foundations. NEF is based in Brussels, at the Philanthropy House, it currently hosts 8 philanthropic collaboratives.

Overall purpose of the role:

The Grant making manager at NEF is a member of the NEF operations team. The purpose of the role is to support the strengthening of the grantmaking practices across NEF and its projects and ensure that NEF standards and guidelines are met at the different stages of the grantmaking across NEF projects.

The Grant making manager works under the supervision of the NEF Executive Director, in close collaboration with the Senior Finance Manager, the Hub Coordinator, and the Project Teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and monitor the implementation of NEF policies and frameworks around grantmaking by NEF projects through due diligence and financial checks, NEF internal audits, regular updates and/or ad hoc requests;
  • Contribute to the learning component around NEF grantmaking frameworks, guidelines and processes to ensure alignment and compliance with NEF standards and legal requirements;
  • Support the onboarding of new staff members and contribute to training on NEF grantmaking frameworks and guidelines (including on due diligence and safeguarding);
  • Provide guidance, support and advice to Project Teams on effective and impactful grants management and capacity building approaches towards grantees (Funding Plus);
  • Keep up to date with developments, trends and good practices in grantmaking and provide relevant insights and intelligence contributing to NEF’s strategic planning and projects’ grant development as needed;
  • Contribute to NEF risks analysis and mitigation processes related to grantmaking;
  • Provide financial analysis of the grantees’ accounts during the due diligence processes, as well as budget analysis;
  • Manage Optimy – NEF’s centralized grant management IT tool: collect required data from Project Teams and ensure the database is updated and accurate, collect electronic signatures via DocuSign and embed them in the system, and work with Optimy team to make necessary adjustments and improvements to respond to projects’ needs;
  • Participate in the design and implementation of NEF grantee/funder surveys and monitoring, evaluation and learning processes in relation to grantmaking.

Required Experience, Capabilities, and Knowledge:

  • Experience in the philanthropic or social or non-for-profit sector in a similar post – 3 to 5 years’ experience in programme management/finance/grantmaking positions in the social sector, and ideally in the philanthropic sector;
  • Finance, budgeting and controlling: Excellent financial and budgeting skills. Experience running annual internal audits;
  • Project Management: Well-organized with a proven ability to coordinate efforts across different work packages with attention to the “big picture” and the details. Able to manage work packages with many moving parts. Excellent organizational, numerical and time management skills. Ability to work under pressure and on tight deadlines;
  • Supporting Teams: Demonstrated commitment to develop and support teams, collaborate to achieve common goals, and adapt flexibly in a context of complexity and continual change. Strong reporting skills;
  • Tech Savy: PC literacy and experience with MS Office applications, in particular Excel, and ideally, knowledge of CRM and/or grants management software tools;
  • Training: preferably a bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, management, law or another related discipline or proven experience in this field.

Our Offer:

  • An indefinite contract based in Brussels;
  • A monthly gross salary ranging from 3.600€ to 4.100€: annual gross from 50.100€ to 57.000€. This is a Belgian salary range with the 13th salary and holiday pay;
